Male victims

We recognise that men can be victims of domestic abuse, both in gay and straight relationships. We support hundreds of men every year, helping them overcome the harmful impacts of being subject to abuse.
Male victims

Domestic abuse can affect anyone. While women and girls are most often impacted, men can also experience abuse in both heterosexual and same-sex relationships. We provide dedicated support to men affected by domestic abuse.

Men who are experiencing or have survived domestic abuse can access confidential support from our trained advisers. We offer information, practical safety advice and emotional support, as well as access to specialist practitioners who can help with issues such as housing and navigating the criminal justice system.

If you need to leave an abusive situation, we can support you to access safe accommodation, including our dispersed properties, or help you explore other safe housing options. Abuse is not always physical – please see our domestic abuse page to learn more about the different forms it can take.

Confidential, specialist support

Speak to trained advisers who understand men’s experiences of domestic abuse and can offer confidential guidance, practical next steps and access to specialist support when you’re ready.

The Fortis Programme

The Fortis Programme is a 12 session recovery programme for male survivors of domestic abuse. The programme runs over 12 weeks, and attendees are expected to attend each session. The programme is a trauma-informed ‘psychosocial’ group. The aim is to foster learning, self-awareness, peer support and resolution in a contained environment. It is important not to confuse this with a therapy group.

The programme is predominantly aimed at those who have left an abusive relationship from an intimate partner and we acknowledge that it may also be more difficult for attendees who are still ‘in the trauma’ to work through some of the exercises”.

The Phoenix Project is a ten week psycho-educational programme that explores how to stay safe in and out of abusive relationships, the tactics that abusers use and the effect that abuse has had on us as individuals as well as looking at our own boundaries and communication. It is a supportive and educational group designed to help people move past abuse to live healthier happier lives. It’s suitable for men and women (although not in the same group) and those in same sex relationships.

“The support I received from Stop Domestic Abuse was invaluable. Without receiving the 1-1 support from my key worker, I wouldn’t be where I am today. It wasn’t just the emotional support she gave, but also how she helped me practically too. I felt equipped in knowing what to do to keep myself safe; I was supported thoroughly throughout the whole Police process, and whenever I felt worried or upset my keyworker was at the end of the phone for me.”
